What California Inmate Locator Results Mean

A locator row is a snapshot, not a court file. Counties label the same facts differently. Read the fields before you assume the person is eligible to leave or allowed to have visitors today.

Name and identifiers
Name is the name taken at booking. It may not match the name the family uses. Date of birth is the safest way to confirm you have the right person when the last name is common.
Booking number, jacket number, or inmate ID is the number the jail uses internally. Have it ready for the facility desk, a visitor application, and any release conversation. It is not a CDCR number and not a BOP register number.
Custody status
- In custody / active / housed: The person is still inside that system as of the last update.
- Released: They left that facility. It does not tell you whether they went home, to court, to another jail, or to ICE.
- Transferred: Look up the receiving facility. San Diego and Orange County move people between intake and housing jails often.
- Sentenced: Different from “awaiting arraignment.” Sentenced people may have no county bail.
Timestamps lie in both directions. A “released” flag can trail the door by an hour. An “in custody” flag can lag a transfer.
Housing vs arresting agency
The arresting agency is who took the person into custody. Housing is where they sleep now. Families drive to the PD jail listed on a ticket and miss a sheriff transfer. Always match the housing line to a page such as San Diego Central Jail or Vista Detention Facility before you visit.
Charges, bail, and court date
Charge text on a roster is a booking label. It can change after the prosecutor files. It is not a conviction.
A dollar figure next to “bail” is the amount set for that case at that moment. “No bail,” blank bail, or “hold” means a bond on that line may not open the door. Read holds, warrants, and ICE before anyone pays a premium.
A court date is the next scheduled appearance the jail knows about. It can move. Confirm with the court if the date matters for work or travel.
When a bail number is on the screen
A listed amount means you can ask about cash to the jail or a surety bond. It does not mean the person will be out tonight. Processing time and holds still control release. Overview: bail and release options.

Why do two sites show different bail amounts?
One may be stale, or there may be more than one case. Trust the jail’s current record and the paperwork the agent pulls from the facility.
If charges say “misdemeanor,” is release automatic?
No. Cite-and-release is an agency decision. Some misdemeanors still book into the sheriff jail.
Can I rely on a screenshot from this morning?
No. Recheck housing before you drive or send money.
